BIOMATERIALS
AND FUNCTIONAL OBJECTS

At ALBA, flour forms the base and quality ingredient for unusually good slices of sourdough pizzas.

During flour production, spelt bran emerges as a by-product and consists of discarded grain parts like husks. It is often used as animal feed, can be added in small amounts as a dietary supplement, and more recently also finds application as disposable tableware.

In this collaboration, spelt bran — sourced from ALBA's small, local producer "Altbachmühle" in Switzerland — takes on a different role: Here, it's the key component for a limited number of wall sconces, Exploring the by-product's potential as a natural resource for new biomaterials.

REFLECTING TACTILITY OF SPELT HUSKS THROUGH LIGHT

The wall sconce showcases maximum simplicity in shape and joining technique, drawing attention to the raw texture of the biomaterial and its interplay with light. Adapting to the direct influences of light, tones of the sconce appear from a muted brown up to a vibrant amber.

This approach makes the sconce extremely versatile. It contrasts and complements particularly well with smooth white walls, cold-toned floors, organic or brutalist surroundings, offering a warm, illuminated character.
